The art I make is the result of a life-long love of pattern, texture and color. How I teach is a skill honed by experience (I started teaching creative arts to younger kids when I was 12). After earning a B.A. in Studio Arts from Trinity University, I helped lead an internationally recognized educational foundation, designed curriculum exhibits for schools and other institutions, wrote and edited for a major daily newspaper, opened the San Antonio Children's Museum and then, a dozen years ago, took the scary but essential (for me) leap to become a fulltime artist and art teacher.

About This Blog

This weblog is about the maker's life. The teacher's path. The stitching and dyeing and printing of the craft of art cloth and art quilt. The stumbling around and the soaring, the way the words and the pictures come together. Poetry on the page and in the piecing of bright scraps together. The inner work and the outer journeys to and from. Practicalities and flights of fancy and fearful grandeur, trivial pursuits and tactile amusements. Expect new postings two or three times a week, unless you hear otherwise.

    Pomegranate Quilt

As promised, the strip quilt, thanks to fear-busting activity inspired by Rayna Gillman's new book. See the start at this post on my blog a few days ago.

Susie...It is great to see this quilt! I particularly like your use of the central "square" with the unifying image of the pomegranate. You were successful, IMHO...and have created a nice piece. Just read her book and also making my first project using this concept. and it has been a true stretch from comfort for me. Thanks for posting your process, it is not only successful but encourages me to keep exploring the technique in more than one project.

    Hi Susie,
Oh how I love your pomegranates! I too have Rayna's book, and have enjoyed what I've had time to read in it. I'm planning to spend more time with it after the Mastery 2010 show in late March. BTW, I hope you'll be there for the opening:
    March 29th, 6-8PM.

Wonderful quilt. I like how you took Rayna technique and adapted to your own style. I think that is the point of her book.

I got to see this beautiful quilt in person today. The blog posting photo does not do it justice!
