The art I make is the result of a life-long love of pattern, texture and color. How I teach is a skill honed by experience (I started teaching creative arts to younger kids when I was 12). After earning a B.A. in Studio Arts from Trinity University, I helped lead an internationally recognized educational foundation, designed curriculum exhibits for schools and other institutions, wrote and edited for a major daily newspaper, opened the San Antonio Children's Museum and then, a dozen years ago, took the scary but essential (for me) leap to become a fulltime artist and art teacher.

About This Blog

This weblog is about the maker's life. The teacher's path. The stitching and dyeing and printing of the craft of art cloth and art quilt. The stumbling around and the soaring, the way the words and the pictures come together. Poetry on the page and in the piecing of bright scraps together. The inner work and the outer journeys to and from. Practicalities and flights of fancy and fearful grandeur, trivial pursuits and tactile amusements. Expect new postings two or three times a week, unless you hear otherwise.

Susie, You look great on tape. Like your hair, too. I thought the preview was very enticing to want to buy a DVD, and so colorful. It's always fascinating just to watch you draw freehand. Liked the tip about buying children's water soluble crayons.

Good on you, Susie!!!!! What you show us is wonderful and I am going to order this DVD. I have worked with the water color crayons in the past and love what you bring to them. Excitement and a new point of view. You go, Girl!

    Hello Susie,

I watched your Mixed-Media Textile Art DVD last night (I purchased it from Interweave) and was thoroughly impressed! You did an excellent job and all the little comments you made while you were creating the art quilt were very helpful. I will give you a 10 (based on 0-10 scoring) on this one! I am also considering buying Jane Dunnewald's DVD, because as you mentioned above, the two DVDs go hand in hand.

I highly recommend this DVD to all of you! Besides the greatness of the workshop, Susie appears to be a lovely person!

Oh yes, and I agree with Robin - the tip about the childrens' water soluble crayons was a helpful one for me. I don't have a lot of money to spare, although I have heard that Inktense Pencils are lovely. I'll have to save up for a set of those. In the meantime, I'm heading to Kmart to buy some water soluble crayons.

Thank you so much for sharing your techniques with those of us who are stuck in the middle of nowhere (not that I don't love where I live) and don't have a lot of opportunity to travel to workshops.

Hi, i just watched your DVD that I downloaded from Quilting Arts and I am ready to make a house quilt. I did a pause trying to capture an image so I could judge the size of the house. Could you share a good working measurement so that I can put my hubby to work.
    Thanks
    Ann
