The art I make is the result of a life-long love of pattern, texture and color. How I teach is a skill honed by experience (I started teaching creative arts to younger kids when I was 12). After earning a B.A. in Studio Arts from Trinity University, I helped lead an internationally recognized educational foundation, designed curriculum exhibits for schools and other institutions, wrote and edited for a major daily newspaper, opened the San Antonio Children's Museum and then, a dozen years ago, took the scary but essential (for me) leap to become a fulltime artist and art teacher.

About This Blog

This weblog is about the maker's life. The teacher's path. The stitching and dyeing and printing of the craft of art cloth and art quilt. The stumbling around and the soaring, the way the words and the pictures come together. Poetry on the page and in the piecing of bright scraps together. The inner work and the outer journeys to and from. Practicalities and flights of fancy and fearful grandeur, trivial pursuits and tactile amusements. Expect new postings two or three times a week, unless you hear otherwise.

    Onward Artist's Journey

The weekend's Artist Journey/Arthist Journal workshop was, again, a wonderful gathering.  We each made posters 9with many differnet sizes of prints to take away) of a slogan, motto or theme for the upcoming year. (Mine, above). With a spattering of writing exercises, some short meditation sittings, a bunch of great meals, and deep conversation about our acomplishments, challenges, work-in-progress and life in general, we left the workshop renewed and with direction and intention. What more can a teacher/facilitator ask?

The photos here are just a bit of our work. First, Pat's notice to herself:

PS As a little subnote, anyone who wants more information about why I opposed the current legislation before Congress dealing with internet issues may want to watch this TED.com video explanation of the proposed legislation PIPA/SOPA:

It looks as though the bills are tabled for the time being.

I have my calendar up and now what! I loved seeing your organization board. Can you share the color coding, file on the left, and the 2 color coded pages on the right. As I reorganize, and change the studio this looks like a great place to start. Trying to keep a focus is hard and your postings are wonderful encouragement as always. Thanks so much for your insights.

Liz, each of the little dots is a code that I did something that day_ ate consciously, made art, walked or exercised, stayed focused -- I like giving myself LOTS of STARS! So far it is really helping and is fun. The file on left is a folder envelope that I am using to put paper stuff in related to the week or weeks coming up -- papers I need to file, mail, etc. I think the coding is not necessarily universal, just particular to what I want to pay attention to right now. I am also charting my steps and diet right now on MY FITNESS PAL site because we are trying to get in shape to walk the Camino de Santiago this May! Well, part of it!
